A Communicative Grammar of
English is a new kind of grammar. In writing it, we have assumed that studying
grammar, for the overseas student, makes most sense if one starts with the
question ‘How can I use grammar to communicate?’. Thus the main part of the book
is devoted to the USES of grammar, rather than to grammatical STRUCTURE.
The book is intended primarily
for the fairly advanced student, for example the first-year university student.
If you are such a student you will have studied English grammar in one form or
another already, but here we offer you a hew perspective on the subject, which
relates grammatical structure systematically to meanings, uses and situations.
In this way we hope you will improve and extend the range of your communicative
skill in the language. The book also supplies the essential information about
grammatical forms and structures which you will need, and can therefore be used
as a general reference book or sourcebook on English grammar.

Книга представляет собой учебное справочное пособие, предназначенное для
изучения грамматики английского языка с точки зрения ее использования в целях
коммуникации. Пособие построено по принципу использования грамматических
структур в речи, причем основное внимание уделено смыслу, семантике и характеру
употребления этих структур. Впервые опубликованно
лондонским издательством Longman в 1975 г. Адресуется
в первую очередь учителям и преподавателям английского языка.
Примечание: Сейчас, летом 2008, насколько я
знаю, 3-го издания 2003г. в сети нет. У человека, который сканировал эту книгу,
был, наверно не самый лучший день. Как он сам признается, он отсканировал 1-е
издание из своей личной библиотеки с оригинальной обложкой и с обложкой,
позаимствованной на Amazon.com. Отсюда пошла большая путаница по многим сайтам.
Размещая книги, мало кто интересуется их описаниями. А ведь в издательских
каталогах ясно сказано, что 3-е издание, 2003, содержит 456 страниц, а здесь
всего 304. Удивительно и то, что порой в разделе для скачивания пишут правильные
каталожные данные (456с. и пр.), а скачав, получаешь этот же вариант в 304 стр. Причем
это на профессиональных, языковых сайтах. Ну правильно, зачем же книжки
разархивировать и просматривать, это для здоровья вредно, можно же просто бросать
ссылки не глядя.
